Why is Claude not responding?
Common Causes
When Claude stops responding, it's often because the servers are experiencing high demand. Anthropic's Claude is a cloud-based service, so outages or slowdowns can happen during peak usage times.
Your own internet connection can also be the culprit. A weak Wi-Fi signal or a temporary network glitch can interrupt communication with Claude's servers.
Less commonly, the issue might be with your account—such as a payment problem, a temporary suspension, or hitting a usage limit. If you're on a free plan, you might have reached the daily message cap.
- Server overload or outage
- Poor internet connection
- Account issues (billing, limits)
- Browser cache or cookies
- VPN or firewall blocking access
What to Try First
Start by checking Anthropic's official status page for any ongoing incidents. If everything looks normal, refresh the page or restart your browser.
If that doesn't work, try a different network or device. Sometimes switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data can bypass a local network problem.
If you suspect an account issue, log out and back in, or check your billing status. For persistent problems, contact Anthropic support.
- Refresh the page or restart browser
- Check status.anthropic.com
- Try another device or network
- Clear browser cache and cookies
- Log out and log back in
Common mistakes
- Assuming Claude is down when the problem is actually your internet connection.
- Not checking the official status page before troubleshooting further.
- Ignoring usage limits—free users may hit a cap and need to wait.
