Why does Claude stop mid-answer?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerA reply can stop partway when it reaches a length limit, the connection drops, or a usage cap is reached. Ask it to continue, and if that fails, shorten the request and try again.

Common reasons it cuts off

Long answers can run into a maximum response length, and Claude will stop even if the thought is unfinished. A weak connection or a page refresh can also interrupt the stream before the reply is complete. Heavy use may trigger a temporary limit that ends the response early.

  • The answer hit its maximum length
  • Your connection dropped during the reply
  • A usage limit was reached
  • The browser tab was closed or refreshed

Getting the rest of the answer

Type a short follow-up such as continue from where you stopped, which usually picks up the thread. If the answer keeps cutting off, ask for it in smaller parts, such as one section at a time. Breaking the task down gives each response room to finish.

Preventing it next time

For long tasks, ask for an outline first and then request each part separately. Keep the page open until the reply is fully displayed, and check the connection if the text stalls. A clear, narrower request tends to produce a complete answer. Note exactly where the reply stopped, since that detail helps if you need to report a problem.

Common mistakes

  • Refreshing the page in the middle of a long reply and losing the rest.
  • Asking for an entire book in one message.
  • Assuming the answer is complete when the last sentence looks abrupt.
