Can Claude browse the internet?
When and how Claude can browse
Claude can browse the internet if you enable the web search feature. This is available on Claude Pro, Team, and Enterprise plans, and also through the API with a tool. On the free plan, web search is not available.
When enabled, Claude can perform searches, read web pages, and cite sources. You'll see a toggle or button to turn it on before sending a message. If it's off, Claude cannot access current information.
- Web search works on paid plans (Pro, Team, Enterprise).
- Free users cannot browse the web.
- You must manually enable web search in the chat interface.
- Claude can also use tools via API for browsing.
- Browsing includes reading pages and citing sources.
What Claude can and cannot do
With web search, Claude can look up recent news, check facts, and summarize web content. It can also follow links you provide. However, it cannot log into websites, fill out forms, or interact with pages beyond reading them.
Without web search, Claude's knowledge is limited to its training cutoff (early 2025 for most models). It may still answer questions about general topics but won't know about recent events.
Common mistakes
- Assuming Claude always browses the web by default—it doesn't unless you enable it.
- Thinking free users can use web search—they cannot.
- Believing Claude can perform actions like clicking or typing on websites—it can only read.
