What is Claude Code?
What Claude Code does
Claude Code is built for software work. You point it at a project folder, ask it a question or describe a task, and it reads the relevant files before responding. It can explain how a feature works, track down a bug, or propose changes across several files.
It is different from the regular Claude chat because it is focused on your project files and tools. Many people use the chat app for writing and planning, and use Claude Code when the work happens inside a codebase.
- Reads files in your project folder
- Explains code and errors
- Proposes and makes edits you can review
- Runs commands with your approval
Who it suits
Claude Code is useful for developers, but beginners can also use it to learn how code fits together. Asking it to explain a file in plain language is a common first step for people new to programming.
Because it can change files and run commands, it is wise to use it in a backup-ready project and read each request before approving it.
Common mistakes
- Assuming it will work without a project folder to read from.
- Approving commands you do not understand.
- Mixing up the coding tool with the general Claude chat app.
