How do I get started with Claude Code?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerTo get started with Claude Code, install it on your computer, sign in with an eligible Anthropic account, open a project folder, and start a session by typing claude in the terminal. Check the official docs for current install steps.

Check what you need

Claude Code is a coding tool that works inside a project folder on your computer. You need an eligible Anthropic account, which usually means a paid Claude plan or an API account, and plan options change over time. Check the official Claude Code documentation for current requirements before you install.

Install and sign in

Anthropic publishes install instructions for macOS, Linux, and Windows, and some install methods depend on Node.js. Follow the official steps for your system, then complete the sign-in prompt. Once you are signed in, you can start Claude Code from any project folder.

  • Install using the method on the official docs page
  • Open a terminal in your project folder
  • Run claude to start a session
  • Sign in when prompted

Try a safe first session

Start by asking Claude Code to explain a file or summarize how a project works. This shows you how it reads your code before you let it make changes. When it proposes edits or commands, read them carefully and approve only what you understand.

Keep your project in a git repository so you can review and undo changes easily.

Common mistakes

  • Approving commands or edits you have not read, especially in a project with no backup.
  • Running it in a folder that holds sensitive files you did not intend to share.
  • Assuming any Claude account includes Claude Code without checking the current plan details.
